Try this instead: choose a theme song. That’s right. Music can change your mood and help you find the motivation to write.
Pavlov’s Dog was conditioned to salivate at the sound of a bell. Likewise, a theme song can condition you to write essays that rock.
Find a song that gets you going and play it every time you sit down to write. You’ll be sending a positive message to your brain: We can do this! There’s only one downside. When my son went through those intense months of essay writing, he chose Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire. And now he’ll never be able to listen to that song again. But looking back, he concedes it was a small price to pay for victory.
